WFO IS DETERMINED TO CLEAN UP THE POLLUTION IN THE MEDITERRANEAN!

55 garbage trucks in Lebanon the mountains pollute our shores

The Waste Free Oceans (WFO), which started in the European Union and expanded its field of action to draw attention to World-Wide Sea pollution in a short time, accelerated its efforts to clean the seas from waste. WFO, who recently met at a conference held in Brussels, Belgium, discussed the issue of the garbage mountains in the Port of Sayda, Lebanon, which is responsible for the pollution in the Mediterranean, which is on the coast of Turkey. The subject became more attractive with the film “Tragedy”, which starred the famous actor Jeremy Irons, and which was shot at Sayda port, on the same day as the conference, coming to a vision in Brussels.

At the conference in Brussels, Yavuz Eroğlu, the president of the WFO Turkey, Middle East and Africa, gave a speech and gave information about the activities carried out in the regions including the Port of Sayda. Eroglu, in his speech, drew attention to the pollution spreading all over the Mediterranean from the wild waste storage area on the coast of Sayda city. As WFO, he talked about the cleaning of the sea surface with private nets and fishermen, and the work to be done to the public on the beach and under the sea with divers. The scientific preliminary study and the project they conducted on this subject were introduced at the conference for the first time.

WFO Turkey, Middle East and Africa President Yavuz Eroğlu, first of all, the landfill forming the coastal garbage mountains, new and modern waste management applied to the centers to be moved and the sea surface and bed of the waste should be cleaned stressed.  Eroğlu said, “with the funds of the European Investment Bank, this landfill will be carried to the new modern waste center and WFO is starting to clean the sea with a pilot project. This work is made up of three feet. The first step of the project is to clean the sea bed with divers, the second step is to clean the water surface with special nets by fishermen, and the third and last foot is to collect garbage on the beach with the participation of the local people., ” he said.

Eroğlu stated that the collected wastes will be evaluated as fuel in cement factories and said, “the second and more comprehensive step will be taken with the examination of the collected wastes in the first phase of the project. This pollution is damaging the people of the region and all Mediterranean countries, including Turkey.  Especially tourism and fishing are affected very badly. In addition, environmental and public health is at great risk. The garbage, which is divided into smaller micro-particles by the sun and waves, is eaten by Fish and comes up to our tables and creates a hazard for our health.”

Noting that sea waste is a global problem, Eroglu continued: “plastics, glass, metal pollution industries such as the ‘responsible industry’ in the concept of the leading role is very important. He established an environmental club at Istanbul Technical University during his student years, he was in a green movement throughout his life, and on the other hand, as the owner of a plastic packaging company, I say this: for the sake of development, the quality of life of our people can not be reduced and health can not be put at risk. As a solution, we need to develop the concept of ‘responsible industry’ all over the world.”

The waterless Sea Movement plans to start projects in Egypt and South Africa. WFO, which first started its activities in Turkey with the "WFO Happy Fish project" in Istanbul Büyükada with the cooperation of PAGEV, TÜDAV in June, collects and recycles Marine wastes with special networks that do not harm the fish.

On the same day as the Belgian conference, The Documentary Film Trashed has entered the vision of the famous actor Jeremy Irons, who wanted to draw attention to the problem of millions of tons of plastic waste entering the oceans around the world. Irons, who came to Brussels for the screening of the film, said that waste should be recycled, said: “We have to start from somewhere. We have the necessary experience and enough technology, science. Europe should lead this issue.  I believe that other countries will follow us.

An important source of pollution is the wastes of the city of Sayda and irregular waste collection areas. The dump in Sayda, Lebanon, seriously threatens the Mediterranean coast.  The ruins of the city, which became ruins during the war in 1982, were poured on the coast of Sayda. Then the other garbage of the city continued to pour into this area. Over the years, giant garbage mountains have formed on the coast of the sea. 55 meters high and spread over a very wide area, this giant garbage every day, an average of 300 tons of garbage is poured.
