SEM Plastik was awarded the first prize in the carbon and Energy Management category with its ‘Borplas – plastic Bakable hot cooking plates’. The plates produced by SEM Plastik by using 5 times lighter and higher rate of renewable resources compared to porcelain plates contribute to the life cycle by reducing the amount of carbon emissions by saving fuel.

SEM plastik, which produces plastic food packaging and service equipment for many of the world's leading airlines, draws attention with its sustainable and environmentally friendly products. SEM Plastik, who succeeded in producing plastic plates that are not melted in the oven for the first time in Turkey, was awarded with this product within the scope of “sustainable work awards”. Competing in the category of carbon and Energy Management, the company saves 5 tons of fuel annually in aircraft with its ‘BORPLAS-plastic Bakable hot dish’ produced with an environmentally friendly approach.

Differentiating from innovative products and special R & D projects for its customers, SEM Plastik decided to develop Borplas within the framework of the airline's fuel saving and weight reduction and carbon emission reduction strategy. Working with more than 30 airline companies around the world, the company has started to develop a much lighter, durable and aesthetic product that can be used to replace traditional heavy porcelain food dishes that will contribute to the ecological objectives of airline companies in line with this strategy. As a result of an R & D process of about 1.5 years, a lightweight, breakage-resistant and scratch-resistant plastic furnace hot dish, which is produced in a stylish appearance, can be used in the furnace.

Borplas offers great advantages in terms of fuel saving, which is one of the most important factors in the cost of airline companies, as well as its appearance and the ability to melt in the oven. The weight of a porcelain dish is 512 grams, and the weight of Borplas is only 110 grams. 30 percent of passengers on the plane are served with BORPLAS when the weight savings on a flight is 30.15 kg. According to IATA 2012 data, an average of 164,25 kg of fuel is consumed annually for an extra weight of 1 kg. The company produces an average annual fuel consumption of 4,952 tons, while reducing carbon emissions significantly.

Durable against breakage, the life of the plastic Bakable hot dish is 1.8 times longer than porcelain products. The dishes can be cooked at 200 degrees Celsius in the home-style electric ovens in Borplas, which is much lighter than porcelain, and served on the same plate. Moreover, the dishwasher can be washed and used again.

SEM Plastik, General Manager of SEM Plastik Yavuz Eroğlu stated that the evaluation of human health, hygiene and environmental impact in SEM Plastik products has gained priority and said: “We are developing products since 1986 for the airline sector. Borplas is the last point of our experience and expertise in the sector. As a result of our R & D efforts, we have developed this product for the first time in Turkey with superior features than similar in the world. When we consider that the whole world is now turning towards sustainable business models that focus on society and the environment, we believe that our product, which increases its edible raw material, is an important example in this respect. The fact that borplas is awarded the Sustainable Business Award has proved that we are moving along a successful line. We're so glad we won the prize.
