SEM Plastik Launches Türkiye’s First Industrial-Scale Refillable Cup Production
As global awareness of sustainability in the packaging industry rises, SEM Plastik has taken a groundbreaking step with a $4.5 million investment that challenges the single-use mindset. The company’s newly established production line manufactures Türkiye’s first industrial-scale refillable coffee cups, paving the way for an environmentally responsible production model and a new industry standard.
At the Eurasia Packaging Istanbul Fair, held in October 2025 and attended by over 80,000 visitors, SEM Plastik’s booth drew strong interest from both local and international participants. The company’s refillable coffee cups were introduced as an innovative and sustainable alternative to traditional single-use cups — showcasing the future of circular packaging.
A New Production Model for a Sustainable Future
Yavuz Eroğlu, Chairman of PAGEV, PAGÇEV, and SEM Plastik, emphasized the scale and impact of the investment:
“This investment is almost the size of an entire factory. In other words, we haven’t just developed a product — we’ve built a completely new production model.”
Highlighting that the refill system is not only an eco-friendly choice but an inevitable transformation soon to be required worldwide, Eroğlu added:
“The era of ‘use-and-throw’ is ending — and the philosophy of ‘use-don’t-throw’ is beginning.”
From Türkiye to the World
SEM Plastik’s refillable coffee cups are not limited to the domestic market. The company aims to expand this refill movement across neighboring countries and global markets. This initiative is described not just as a product launch but as a movement of transformation toward a circular economy.
According to Research Nester, the global refill packaging market reached $17.19 billion in 2024 and is projected to exceed $35.78 billion by 2037, demonstrating the vast potential of this growing industry.
A Global Regulatory Shift Toward Refill Models
The upcoming European Union Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), set to take effect in 2026, will require brands to include multi-use packaging on retail shelves. While this regulation is not yet mandatory in Türkiye, companies working with global supply chains are encouraged to adapt early to the refill transformation.
