The packaging will save 1.5 million tons of vegetable fruit from garbage!
MEASURES TO STOP FOOD WASTE…
MEASURES TO STOP FOOD WASTE…
Our world is failing to feed its population of more than 7 billion with scarce resources. While more than 1 billion people live on the edge of hunger, one-third of the food produced in the world goes to the trash without even reaching the table, revealing a table that needs to be considered. One of the main reasons for food waste, the eupc European Plastic Manufacturers Association, which is acting on the fact of inadequate packaging, launched the project “protect food”. Every year millions of tons of food goes to the garbage in our country to implement similar measures will be started to work.
In the European Union, 79 million people live below the poverty line while 16 million live with the aid of food. In European households, supermarkets, restaurants and supply chains, 50 percent of the food consumed is wasted. In order to deal with this problem, the European Parliament set a goal to halve food waste by 2025, and accordingly, 2014 was declared the “European Year of Action Against Food Waste”.
Eupc European Plastic Manufacturers Association started in this direction,” protect Food " Project at the beginning of the EUPC Executive Board Member Yavuz Eroğlu. Eroglu is the first Turkish member of EUPC to be elected to management from a non-EU country. European plastic manufacturers aim to protect millions of tons of food and reach the needy people through some steps.
EUPC Executive Board Member Yavuz Eroğlu, who gave information about the studies carried out within the scope of the project, stated that they started to work and took steps in this direction by putting out the main reasons underlying the waste of food. Eroglu pointed out that the correct packaging extends the life of consumption by protecting the foods, “unfortunately, the table in our country is not different from Europe in terms of food waste. According to the latest data, in Turkey, where 12 million people live below the poverty line, it is a serious problem to waste 3,6 billion pounds of bread every year, and the loss of fresh vegetables and fruits produced to 16 billion pounds is a serious problem to be solved. The packaging sector can provide 1.5 million tons of fresh vegetables and fruit every year to go to the tables and not to the trash. 10 million bread is wasted every day in our country. Packaging of bread allows for longer storage., ” he said.
Yavuz Eroğlu, emphasizing that we can reduce losses by half by packaging food correctly, said that they aim to implement the measures taken within the scope of the Food Protection Project carried out in Europe in Turkey, and that a new model is needed because of the increase in waste in large-scale projects such as the distribution of children in schools and
What does the food protection project target?…
* On the foods ‘expiration date 'along with the’ last consumption date' should be written…
* In order to prevent consumers from buying more food than they need, food packaging needs to be in different sizes and in such a way as to really protect food.
In addition to the expiration date written on the foods, the date of the last consumption is also written on the foods that are close to the expiration date will also be opened for sale at discounted prices.
· The Food Protection Project draws attention to the need to be rearranged in the form of priority for the companies that use local food products and give free to the needers and food banks instead of throwing away the excess food left in public catering tenders.
Pain of food waste table…
· We lose or waste one third of the food produced in the world, 1.3 billion tons of food…
· Every year, consumers in rich countries consume 222 million tons of food, throwing it in the trash... only 230 million tons of food production in the entire sub-Saharan Africa continent.
· According to a study by Stuttgart University in Germany, the German people throw away 11 million tons of food a year. In other words, a German consumes 235 euros of food a year. This figure is equal to the annual income of 1.5 billion people in the world.
* The amount of food that is lost or wasted every year is more than half of the world's grain crops (2.3 billion tons in 2009 and 2010).)
· Food loss and waste brings with it a serious waste of resources. Water, agricultural land, energy, labor and capital are wasted, unnecessary greenhouse gas emissions are generated. Global warming and climate change is causing.
· Food waste and loss in developing countries occurs in the first rings of the Food Value Chain. In addition to financial, managerial and technical deficiencies in harvesting, the inadequacy in storage and cooling facilities stands out. Food loss can be reduced by supporting farmers in the supply chain and investing in infrastructure, by increasing the use of transportation and packaging.
· In countries with moderate and high income, food is often wasted on the last rings of the supply chain. Consumer behavior in industrialized countries is the main cause of food waste.
Who's Responsible For The Food Waste?
