A Silent Revolution in Packaging: Microplastics Are Becoming History
PAGEV Chairman Yavuz Eroğlu announced at the 11th Sustainable Food Summit that PHA (Polyhydroxyalkanoate) technology will revolutionize the packaging sector. Today, the thin plastic layers used for sealing most paper cups and food containers prevent the packaging from being recycled and composted in nature. PHA-coated packaging, on the other hand, provides high protection while fully biodegrading in both terrestrial and marine environments. Scientific data show that a PHA-coated paper cup returns to nature in just 130 days, which is 13 times faster than conventional plastics.
TURKEY’S LEADING ROLE
With the RecyLoop Sustainable Packaging project, Turkey holds a globally pioneering position in PHA technology. The project was awarded the “Green Nobel” at the 2025 Sustainable Business Awards and demonstrated the industrial-scale feasibility of PHA.
THE FUTURE OF INDUSTRY
Eroğlu summarizes the future of packaging as “materials that come from nature and return to nature”:
"This approach represents the birth of a new industrial perspective that protects both food safety and ecosystems."
